Aquila Big 5 Day Safari

Aquila Game Reserve exceeded all expectations! We saw four of the Big 5 - lions, elephants, buffalo, and rhinos. The leopard was elusive but our guide said that's normal. The landscape is stunning with the backdrop of mountains and valleys. Our ranger was incredibly knowledgeable about animal behavior and conservation efforts. The game drive vehicles are comfortable and provide excellent viewing opportunities. Highly recommend the full day tour!

Our family (including kids aged 8 and 12) had an incredible time at Aquila! The children were fascinated by all the animals, especially the elephants and giraffes. Our guide was excellent at engaging the kids with fun facts and stories. The open-vehicle safari gives you amazing photo opportunities. The reserve feels authentic despite being relatively close to Cape Town. Educational aspect was great for the kids to learn about African wildlife.

Honestly didn't expect much from a 'safari' so close to Cape Town, but Aquila completely changed my mind! The game reserve is huge and feels wild. We encountered lions, elephants, buffalo, and countless other species. The mountain scenery adds a unique element you won't find in typical African bush settings. Rangers are top-notch and clearly love their work. This is definitely a highlight of our Cape Town visit!

What impressed me most was the conservation focus at Aquila. They're doing important work rehabilitating animals and protecting endangered species. Seeing the white rhinos up close was particularly moving given their endangered status. The guides are passionate about conservation and share important messages about protecting African wildlife. The safari experience is excellent, but knowing you're supporting conservation makes it even more meaningful.

The day is quite long with the drive from Cape Town (about 2 hours each way), but the game reserve itself makes it worthwhile. Lunch was good and the facilities are well-maintained. Rangers are passionate and informative.

As a wildlife photographer, Aquila provided fantastic opportunities! The animals are well-habituated to vehicles, allowing for close encounters. Got amazing shots of lions lounging, elephants bathing, and giraffes feeding. The landscape photography opportunities are also excellent with the mountain backdrop. Rangers understand photography needs and position vehicles well. Recommend bringing telephoto lenses for the best shots.

The wildlife viewing at Aquila is good and we saw most of the animals we hoped for. However, it does feel quite commercialized compared to wild African safaris I've done elsewhere. The animals are somewhat habituated to vehicles and the whole experience feels a bit managed. That said, for a day trip from Cape Town, it's convenient and the facilities are good. Kids would definitely enjoy it more than adults seeking authentic wilderness.
